Inside the Redding Police Department Citizens Academy: A Graduate’s Perspective

The Redding Police Department Citizens Academy is more than just a behind-the-scenes look at law enforcement—it’s a hands-on, eye-opening journey into the inner workings of our local police department. As a proud graduate of the inaugural class, I can say with confidence that this program enhanced the way I view public safety, deepened my appreciation for those who serve, and strengthened my connection to the work being done every day inside the Redding Police Department.

I’ve always had a natural respect and supportive mindset when it comes to public safety. My uncle and grandfather on my dad’s side both served as deputies for the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office, so the values of service, protection, and community have always been close to home. But going through this academy gave me a front-row seat to what that looks like on a local level here in Redding.

A Rare Look Behind the Badge

Throughout the 9-session course, we didn’t just sit in a classroom. We rotated between key locations—including Redding City Hall, SHASCOM-911 (the Shasta Area Safety Communications Agency), the Redding Police Department headquarters, and other off-site training spaces depending on the weekly topic. Every week offered a new environment, new faces, and new perspectives.

One of the most memorable experiences was a mock crime scene staged by the detectives. We were tasked with investigating it like real investigators—analyzing evidence, reviewing scenarios, and collaborating as a team. It was not only a fun and immersive experience, but a powerful way to understand the pressure and precision required in real-life investigations.

Another major highlight was participating in ride-alongs with on-duty officers—something I’ve now had the opportunity to do several times. These ride-alongs are incredibly eye-opening. Sitting passenger seat while officers respond to real-time calls gives you a level of insight that you simply can’t get from a book, video, or presentation.

Building Trust, One Class at a Time

The Citizens Academy is all about building stronger relationships between the department and the people they serve—and it absolutely succeeds. Each session is taught by subject matter experts within the department, from detectives and patrol supervisors to dispatchers and command staff. Everyone was open, honest, and genuinely excited to share their world with us.

As someone who works closely with public agencies in my day-to-day life, I came in with a high level of respect. But this program gave me a much broader understanding of how the department operates—and just how many roles exist behind the scenes to keep our city running safely. From dispatch and investigations to traffic enforcement and community outreach, every person plays a part in protecting the quality of life we enjoy in Redding.
